Dominik Köninger, baritone

Born in Heidelberg, the German baritone Dominik Köninger studied at the Opera School in Karlsruhe with Prof. Roland Hermann, participating in numerous productions, i. a. as Dandini in Rossini’s  La Cenerentola, as Teodoro in the first German performance of Paisiello/Henze’s Il re Teodoro in Venezia at Schwet­zinger Festspiele and at Badisches Staatstheater, and as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte.

He has been awarded a number of scholarships and prizes, among them scholarships of Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg and Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes, first prize at Mozart Festival Competition Würzburg 2006; prizes from the Wagner Association and at Anneliese-Rothenberger Competition. Furthermore he has attended master classes, among others with Brigitte Fassbaender, Ann Murray und Kurt Moll, completing his education.

In 2004 he made his debut at Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspiele under Wolfgang Gönnenwein; upon which he performed the following seasons as Moralès in Bizet’s Carmen at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe.

His wide opera and concert repertory which draws from baroque to contemporary compositions allowed him to work with such great conductors as Kent Nagano, Herbert Blomstedt and Rolf Beck and led him to prestigious places as Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Stuttgarter Liederhalle, Philharmonie Berlin, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Rudolfinum Prague, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Opera of Vilnius and to Israel.

During the season of 2006/07 he was a constant member of Tiroler Landestheaters Innsbruck, performing the roles of Ottokar/Der Freischütz, Dr.Falke/Die Fledermaus and Guglielmo/Cosi fan tutte with such directors as Peer Boysen and Brigitte Fassbaender.

At the beginning of the season of 2007/08 Dominik Köninger became a member of the International Opernstudio at Staatsoper Hamburg, singing i. a. Papageno, Schaunard/La Bohème und Marullo/Rigoletto. At Schleswig Holstein Festival 2009 he took part in the Johannes-Passion as Jesus, directed by Robert Wilson.

The season of 2009/10 saw him in guest performances in Hamburg as Cascada/Lustige Witwe, Kilian/Freischütz(de Billy) at Theater an der Wien, exactly there also as Mercurio/Poppea (Hengelbrock/Carsen) and in concerts:  Schumann’s „Das Paradies und die Peri“ in Frankfurt/Main, Jesus on tour with SHMF in Ljubljana, a Lied project with Bachakademie Stuttgart as well as Mozart’s Coronation Mass under the baton of Helmut Rilling.

Performances in the season of 2010/11 include Dr. Falke/Fledermaus at Staatsoper Stuttgart and at Vienna Volksoper (there also as Dandini/Cenerentola, furthermore at Theater an der Wien in Dialogue des Carmelites”, at Hamburg State Opera as Papageno etc.  – With the SHMF production by Robert Wilson (Johannes-Passion) he will be guest at the Beethoven Festival in Warsaw, under the baton of Christopher Hogwood he will sing Mozart’s version of Haendel’s “Ode to St. Cecilia”, also, and under the baton of Jeffrey Tate he will sing Grieg’s Peer Gynt. Finally, in 2013 he will perform Guglielmo at the New National Theatre in Tokyo.
