Lioba Braun, mezzo soprano

Lioba Braun started her musical education studying sacral music and received her vocal training by Ch. Lehmann. Her international career took a quite spectacular turn in 1994, when she jumped in at short notice to sing Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at the Bayreuth Festival with Daniel Barenboim conducting. Subsequently she was invited by Europe’s main opera companies, such as the Scala in Milan, Teatro Real in Madrid, Liceu in Barcelona and the state operas of Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart and Vienna, to name but a few. Thanks to her extensive Wagner repertoire she’s been a regular guest with the Bayreuth Festival.

She has worked with numerous renowned orchestras and conductors and made several recordings, including "Lioba Braun sings Wagner" (SONY 2005) with Peter Schneider conducting, Mozart’s Requiem under the baton of Christian Thielemann (Deutsche Grammophon 2006), Mahler’s 2nd and 8th Symphony with Jonathan Nott as well as Brahms’ Altrhapsodie with Helmuth Rilling.

Lioba Braun’s engagements from 2007 have included Venus/Tannhäuser in Los Angeles under the baton of James Conlon, with Deutsche Oper Berlin in China  and at Teatro Real in Madrid (cond. J. Lopez-Cobos), followed by concerts in Brüssel (Mahler III), Baden-Baden, Vienna, Rome and at the Salzburg Festival with Mariss Jansons conducting. Other than that, in recent past she performed Kundry under the baton of Kent Nagano at Bayerische Staatsoper München, in Naples  and with Semperoper Dresden; Ortrud at Oper Leipzig and with Vienna State Opera, Judith/Bluebeard with Dresdner Musikfestspiele and with Münchner Philharmoniker (H. Haenchen), Isolde in her first concert in this role in Lyon (J. Märkl) just as well as Brangäne with D. Barenboim/P. Chéreau at La Scala in Milan, in Torino under Jeffrey Tate and again in Los Angeles (cond. James Conlon). On top of this, she sang Beethovens 9. in Munich under C. Thielemann,  Alma-Mahler-Lieder with James Judd in Goldener Musikvereinssaal in Vienna, Mahler’s 2nd with J. Nott, Mahler’s 3rd with Christoph Eschenbach and Zubin Mehta (Berlin Philharmonic), Mahler’s Lied von der Erde and Berg’s 7 early songs with G.Tate amongst many other projects.

Starting in October 2010 in addition to her singing activities Lioba Braun works as professor for singing at Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Cologne.
